Robert & Jane Wassler Family
Bob Wassler, Elder Class of 1945, enrolled at Elder in the fall of 1941 after attending St. Catharine of Siena grade school where he was active in the Siena Club. While at Elder, Bob was an honor student in ‘43 and ’44, a member of the Literary Society in ‘44 and ’45, and played basketball and baseball all four years. Bob also worked in the family business, Wassler Meats, after school and on weekends, which he one day would own with his older brother, Gene ‘43.
Enlisting in the Navy upon graduation in 1945, Bob served his country at the end of WWII on several ships, but mainly the aircraft carrier USS Independence bringing back troops to the US from the Pacific theater.
In 1943, Bob met the love of his life, Jane Edrich (Seton ‘45). Their courtship culminated in a ‘romantic’ proposal in the Elder Stadium at a Friday night game. Bob and Jane married on September 4, 1950, and raised a family of eight children, five girls and three boys – Bob ‘71, Ken ’75, and Dave ‘79. As a member of the ‘Greatest Generation’ and with love of God and family, their family grew over the years to include many grandchildren (31) and great-grandchildren (46).
Bob’s fondness for Elder was well known in the family. He attended many class reunions and luncheons and stayed lifelong friends with many classmates. He even had a room painted purple.
The impact of Elder High School was lifelong for the Bob and Jane Wassler family, and on February 17, 2021, the family of Robert and Jane Wassler honored their parents’ legacy by establishing a permanent scholarship that will help afford the Elder experience for others in the community.
