Lou Ruehl
Lou Ruehl, Elder class of 1947, played second base for the Elder Panthers’ baseball team, forming lifetime friendships with some of his teammates. After graduation, Lou pursued his dream of becoming a professional baseball player, playing with various teams in the Cincinnati Reds’ farm system. But those dreams were set aside when Lou was drafted into the Korean War, stationed in Goose Bay, Greenland.
When Lou returned home, he met and married his sweetheart, Alma, and they started a family. His adventures had just begun as a family of five, his wife and three daughters. Lou’s love of baseball and the Red’s never wavered, listening and watching every game and even attending the Reds’ first night game. After Alma passed away in 1995, Lou reconnected with a childhood friend, Elsina Borger Streicher, and they married several years later.
Lou passed away in 2017 leaving behind his three daughters and their families and his eight bonus children and their families. A scholarship was started in his name by his three daughters to honor their wonderful father who cherished three things in his life… family, baseball, and Elder High School.
