During last Friday’s Elder-St.Xavier basketball game, members of Elder’s student section directed racial and ethnic chants toward members of St. Xavier’s team.

Such behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Elder High School regrets the extraordinarily hurtful language and severe lack of respect displayed by its students. We sincerely apologize to the St. Xavier basketball team, its coaching staff, their student section, and all of the fans, family members and alumni of both schools. This type of behavior is contrary to our Catholic faith, and does not reflect the lessons taught in our classrooms, hallways, and on our fields of play.

We held an all-school assembly the morning of the first day of classes following Friday’s game to address the seriousness of Friday’s incident. We informed our students that we will take this opportunity to educate them on the value of celebrating diversity, the importance of accepting responsibility for one’s behavior, and the gravity of hurtful words and actions, including how these reflect poorly upon ourselves, our families, and our school. We will be bringing in outside speakers on these topics. The first of these sessions is scheduled for this Friday.

We promise to do everything in our power to reestablish the trust of the community as we continue our commitment to preparing our young men to lead virtuous lives both during and after high school.
